Re: mirror project tag on websites
Mon, January 12, 2004 - 8:43 AMcheryl, we don't personalize the badges at all. when we relaunched as the mirror project in june of 2001, we chose those three images to represent the site. -

Re: mirror project tag on websites
Tue, January 13, 2004 - 9:58 AMHeather: Is there an official position on personalising link buttons? I don't display one now, but I had created my own based on one of the official ones. And obviously there are other non-official ones floating about. Just curious. I have always wondered, and Cheryl's question seemed to allow me to segue into the question :) -

Re: mirror project tag on websites
Tue, January 13, 2004 - 12:16 PMwell, if you take into account that i'm an anal attentive designer, it might come as no suprise that i'm a little hesitant over the non-official badges.
while it's not so much an issue for the individual, if those are picked up by others, or if it becomes the base for another itteration, i can see a degridation in quality.
i'm not sure if that makes sense. -

Re: mirror project tag on websites
Tue, January 13, 2004 - 12:22 PMFYI - You have posted on mirrorproject.com/support/ :
"Don't see one you like, email us and we'll create one for you." referring to the Mirror Project banners/buttons. You might want to remove that then.

Re: mirror project tag on websites
Wed, January 14, 2004 - 2:00 PMI'm wouldn't want to speak for anyone else, but I did read on Heather's site: "Steal my s**t and your p*ck*r will fall off." I take this very seriously.
In any event, "ask first" is a good policy, where intellectual property is concerned. -

Re: mirror project tag on websites
Thu, January 15, 2004 - 6:51 AMIMHO, it isn't necessarily "stealing" if the image being used is one's own. I used my first TMP shot when I created a button. In fact, it could be argued that it is a benefit to the site because it drives traffic. I can see that Heather--and TMP--would want to perhaps set guidelines so that no one creates an offensive button (I'll leave examples to your imagination) because then it reflects (had to use that pun) badly on the site and the site's proprietors. Just my $.02. -

Re: mirror project tag on websites
Fri, January 16, 2004 - 9:09 AMPersonally, I think if people wish to make their own banners & buttons it's perfectly fine. People like to personalize their web sites as they wish. People do that all the time for their favorite sites. Most of the time, the "official" banners & buttons for sites were made for people so they didn't have to or couldn't make their own. -

Re: mirror project tag on websites
Sun, February 1, 2004 - 1:36 PMI don't know why people are making a big thing about this, but htey still are. It's not up to Heather or anyone else on what you can put on YOUR OWN web site. And all these customized buttons are doing is providing people outside of the MP a link to the MP web site. Basically you promoting The Mirror Project, not working for them. You are giving them free advertisement.

Re: mirror project tag on websites
Sun, February 1, 2004 - 7:25 PMi don't see that people are making a big deal. you're responding to your own comment... that is unless i'm unaware of some other dialogue going on elsewhere.
you are correct about what people put on their OWN WEB SITE. please remember that you are dealing with an anal designer who would like to control the universe as we designers are wont to d. course, this isn't ever going to happen.
my desire to have a standard set of buttons is that not all photos make good buttons and represent what the project is about but i don't spend my days patrolling the net asking people to take down their buttons.
i've expressed my feelings and others have expressed theirs. jeff, why are you saying that people are making a big thing about it? -

Re: mirror project tag on websites
Sun, February 1, 2004 - 8:27 PMI responded to my own post cuz I didn't want to create a new topic/thread...
Well, I made a custom button for her. I used to do graphic & web design for a living, and I'm trying to get back in to the graphic end of it (I know about being an anal designer - I can't even decide on a domain name for my new site/blog I want to put up - let alone come up with any good design ideas yet). So, it gave me something to do. I noticed that she hasn't put them on her site and asked her if she needed help getting them displayed there. She said that she needed to talk to you to see if it was alright for her to display a customized button. Maybe "making a big thing about it" wasn't the proper phrase I was looking to say..
The main subject is that I think people are/could of gotten the wrong impression about using customized buttons for the Mirror Project on their site. They just think it's wrong. -
