anyhow thank you so much heather, for letting this book circulate. i hope people havent forgotten that i have it, or have gotten annoyed i've had it soo long. i had many interuptions but i was persistant in finishing it.

I've finished reading the Mirror rorriM book. Task was made simple last week by a business trip to San Francisco; long haul flights are great for catching up on yr recreational reading!

Have emailed Jen Boxer for her address so it can be sent on to Singapore if she's still interested, or not too busy tending her cute and now not-so-new arrival. Miras, IndyJr is not quite accurate: it shows Jen has the book when in fact it's still with me.

Another dialogue idea: post your mirror project photos in response to previous posting. As in hugo's original idea, try to make your posting "dialogue" with the previous one, i.e.: your photo will have similar, theme, content , colouration, etc. Hint: If you do not have your own personal url to post your photo to, post it in your tribe album and copy the posting url and paste it here, Make sure you preview the url before you submit it to make sure it works.

i just have one more part to do... and i said i would have the postcard done last week and mailed. however, when it rains it pours and i've been slammed with creative paying/almost paying projects. so, the postcard has taken a back seat. rest assured that i'll have her done, sooner then later hopefully. she just needs a bit of polyeuthane, to seal in the newsprint...

when are you hoping to show these in the gallery? how many have you recieved thus far?

one of several projects/events hindering my finished product, are the fire arts festival being held at the crucible, in oakland, this coming next week... http://www.thecrucible.org/calendar/faf_04.html

if any of you can make it, it should be a pretty fabulous show. i'll be one of the ones wearing the fire antler's on stilts...

After much consideration, I've decided to move the Mirror Project Newsletter from Notifylist. Delivery has become very spotty over the last few months with frequent delays and non delivery.

If you'd like to continue to receive the newsletter, please visit the URL below to sign up (requires confirmation).

http://mailman.turlyming.com/mailman/listinfo/mirror-list

Despite appearances to the contrary, the new list will be an ANNOUNCE LIST ONLY. Any replies will be directed only to me (please feel free to give feedback on what you'd like to see in future newsletters) and not to the entire list.

I hope you'll consider the move to the new newsletter home -- there will be a new newsletter soon!

your favorite?

which pic(s) in the gallery are your favorites?

personally, i have a thing about the big convex safety mirrors that are placed at blind intersections and alleys. they're usually above eye level which gives a different and unique perspective to an otherwise ordinary scene, plus there's the curvature aspect.

here's one of my faves: http://www.mirrorproject.com/mirror/recent/?id=21421

i can't wait for the weather to get better outside to shoot more - i've had quite enough of this winter gig, although heather _has_ been posting some very nice winter pics on hchamp.com...

Anyway, I'm engaging in some shamless and blatant self promotion to show off some photos I took over the holidays at the end of 2003. Enjoy!!

Second thoughts on the Nikon 5700

Maybe I'm worrying over nothing but...

I've been gazing with awe at the hchamp.com and ephemera.com and wondering if perhaps I should have gone after a Digital Rebel and not the Nikon 5700. Don't get me wrong, I love the Nikon, it's a great camera, but the Digital Rebel seems better, turning out sharper photographs.

Either the 5700 isn't good enough and I should have stumped up the extra Yoyos for the Digital Rebel, or my photographs aren't at the same level as H's and D's.

Oh, the things I worry about! Heh.

some photos may not be work-safe. i wonder if auctions using the sorts of photos mentioned in the article end up with higher ending bids than ones that use more g-rated pics? *smirk*

you may know that we've been deviled by a glitch with the new server since our move in june (this is me pulling my hair out and gnashing my teeth).

it was a huge problem for people on ie6 (like me) and some other browsers that would randomly present a blank white page with a four digit number in the top right and corner or lovely chunks of mysql errors.

anyhoo... chris made a few changes to the server this evening and from where i'm sitting (a lovely non-foggy san francisco evening with a warm chihuahua in my lap) the problems seem to have been solved.

if you have experienced this problem in the past could you take a moment and bang away on the site for me? i'd love further corroboration that we've finally managed to win at whack a mole! (keeping fingers, toes, arm and legs crossed in hope)

thanks... have a wonderful night.

Rotating Mirror and the Asymetrical Face

One fascinating subject in the Mark Pendergrast book, Mirror, Mirror, etc. (being circulated through the tribe) was the idea of mirroring each half of a face and the resulting change of look of two same sides of the face put together. Check the postings on page 10 in the tribe album of experiments I made with a picture of my daughter, Emily and with a picture of me.

Working in PaintShop Pro, I used a facility called "Rotating Mirror" which composes the face with the two mirrored left sides; then I "Flipped" the image (another facility) and then did the revolving mirror trick on the flipped image. The postings show the original pictures, two left sides mirrored, and two right sides mirrored. Shows how asymetrical the human face is.

If you have Paintshop Pro or any other application that does this trick, how about giving it a try and posting the results. If you don't have an application to do this, e-mail me a straight-on picture of yourself and I will do the trick and send the pix back to you. You can choose if you wish to post them here or not. Message me for my e-mail address.

Where's the info about hugo_s being a program of Heather's? Is that true or is it actually the Hugo who has submitted a lot of Mirror Project images. If Hugo_s is a robot, that's freaky!

so, i've been sending out a Mirror Project newsletter for a couple of years now. The archive is here:

http://mirror.notifylist.com/project-archive/
(the one sent out last night isn't listed for some reason)

Theoretically biweekly, delivery has been rather sporadic. If you're a subscriber, do you have any feedback? Things you'd like to see, things you could do without, etc.

Thanks....

Mark Pendergast has recently published a new book Mirror Mirror: A History of the Human Love Affair with Reflection. He was unaware of the Mirror Project while writing the book *gasp* :)

I managed to end up with two copies from the publisher and I'd be happy to share one with the tribe that we could circulate.

A bit of advice...

A bit of advice to all you photo junkies.

My parents just went abroad for a couple of years to do volunteer work. They wanted a digital camera, so I gave them my venerable old Nikon 990. It's a great camera and will serve them well.

But now, I have no digital camera that I can pick up and shoot with. Although a new one is planend (a 5700 Coolpix plus all the trimmings!) It's driving me crazy.

So, my advice is, not to leave yourself camera-less!

seeking digital artists

So here's the score. I will be opening a Digital Arts Gallery in North East England and I am seeking interested artists wanting to showcase their work in a gallery setting. I will be taking applications. Simply email me p_ixepusher@yahoo.co.uk with your URL or some zipped examples of your works.

Should you be selected, you will be part of a new wave of art showcasing. Selected artist will have the opportunity to display their works on a variety of projectors and monitors in the gallery. You will have your own space in other words. This is not a web gallery by any means. It is the first of its kind. An art gallery with the sole purpose of selling and showing off digital artists. No more is the need for a website not one but your friends can access. You will be displaying your art to interested Art Directors and the public alike.

Please not this is only for artists who produce work from their computers. I will not be accepting traditional art as this is not the purpose of the gallery.

In other news, you can join DIGITAL LUCIDITY tribe to also showcase your artwork on tribe. Just add your pieces in the photo section. We have a growing selection of awsome artists and its growing every day.

E: p_ixepusher@yahoo.co.uk
or
mebennet@hotmail.com

p: (uk) 07950 927 164
ask for Melanie

NO NON-DIGITAL ART SUBMISSIONS PLEASE

Christian's recent contribution (http://www.mirrorproject.com/mirror/recent/?id=18947) brought the Mirrored City to my attention:

"The installation "The Mirrored City" enables new spatial experiences, thereby encouraging viewers to reflect on familiar and not so familiar features. And it brings the sea to Graz."

digital vs. conventional

something that david wrote in the 'cult of the new' thread has sparked a thought: what percentage of mp participants use digital as opposed to conventional film? i mean, i love my lomo, but my digital lives in my hand. and i prefer to shoot conventional film.

does the application determine the medium? would you say that the "snapshot" nature of the mp (sorry, no offence intended to contributors) means more people use digital? heather, i know you shoot lomo a lot: would love to hear yr thoughts.

It seems that one of the challenges participants to the Mirror Project face is how to keep creating images and themes that are fresh and original.

Maybe I've been ruined by art school, to be overly concerned with such things, but I'm curious what other people's thoughts are on this?

Is it more about "process over product?"

"customers were attracted to the stores by eye-catching window displays and merchandise from all over the world, and by affordable items that served as bait. while some people remained outside, window shopping -- "licking the windows," as the french expression leche vitrines would have it -- those who ventured inside found a dreamworld of vast assortments of clothing, accessories and home furnishings, all under one roof."

leche vitrines.... are we "leche-miroirs"?

Have you read about "Reflectoporn"?
